For the Cafe Beluga caf\u00e9 at Clemens-August-Stra\u00dfe 51A in Bonn, we made one long chesterfield-style bench, upholstered in red velvet and running along the entire wall of the main room. The length and modular division were designed for this specific wall rather than standard catalog dimensions.<\/p>\n

Velvet in a caf\u00e9 works to a different rhythm than leatherette in a club<\/h2>\n

A cafe guest sits with a coffee and stays for an hour. They don't spill drinks, squeeze between the table and the backrest in a crowd, or lean against the seat while standing. Surfaces wear down more slowly and differently than in a nightclub.<\/p>\n

Under such conditions, velvet provides what faux leather never can: color depth and a softness to the touch that can be felt during prolonged sitting. club<\/a> We would recommend against it without hesitation; here it was the obvious choice. Materials are chosen to match the venue's rhythm, not its price category.<\/p>\n

Furniture as the only calm plane in an ornate interior<\/h2>\n

The wall against which the seat stands is covered with a mural. The interior has a lot of detail and a lot of color, so the furniture had the opposite task of usual: not to add, but to organize.<\/p>\n

The saturated red of the velvet is the only large, uniform plane of color in this room. The seat completes the decor rather than competing with it, and at the same time organizes the arrangement of tables along the entire wall. A continuous sofa does the same thing in such an interior as a frame around a painting.<\/p>\n

What does \u201econtinuous\u201d mean for a piece of furniture that is coming in pieces anyway<\/h2>\n

No sequence of this length enters the premises in one piece. We assemble it from modules, typically one meter or 1.2 meters, up to a maximum of 1.4 linear meters, because that length fits through standard doors and stairwells.<\/p>\n

Continuity is therefore a matter of where the joints fall and how they are made. We plan them at the drawing stage, choosing the division to fit the wall length rather than the other way around. When quilting chesterfield, this has additional significance because the pattern must match at the junction of two segments, otherwise the break stands out more than the gap itself.<\/p>\n

A caf\u00e9 calculates differently than a restaurant<\/h2>\n

A caf\u00e9 sells seating for a longer time with a lower bill, so occupancy is counted differently there than in restaurant<\/a> with dinners. A bench along the wall is more efficient in such a venue than tables with chairs on both sides because it doesn't reserve space for pulling out a chair.<\/p>\n

Roughly two seats are allocated per linear meter of seating. For longer meals, this drops to one four-person table per 1.2 to 1.5 meters, because a guest needs more space around a plate than around a teacup.<\/p>\n
