Krzywy Domek in Sopot: a Paris sofa reworked for a curved wall

Krzywy Domek on Monte Cassino Street in Sopot is one of the most recognisable buildings on the Polish coast and at the same time a building without a single straight wall. We took part in the renovation of its food hall and made sofas there based on our Paris model, adapted to follow the curve of the wall.
Scope of the project
| Element | Details |
|---|---|
| Base model | Paris, depth 70 cm, overall height 95 cm, seat 43 cm |
| Modification | shape adapted to the curve of the wall |
| Fabric | high-quality Belgian fabrics |
| Measuring | done in person on site, not from a floor plan |
| Design | according to the interior designer's concept |
A building without a straight wall
We usually tell clients that a floor plan is enough, and for rooms with a slope or a pillar we ask for a few extra dimensions. Krzywy Domek is a case where a floor plan tells you nothing.
The wall undulates in two planes at once, and the radius of the curve changes along its length. Furniture fitted to the average of such a wall would stand away in one place and run into the wall in another, and with seating running along the whole length every centimetre of gap shows.
We went to measure the arc ourselves
Instead of calculating from the documentation, we went to Sopot and took the curve from life. That is a much simpler decision than explaining to the client a month later that the furniture does not fit because the building turned out different from the drawing.
We always measure on site where the geometry of the interior cannot be written down in two numbers. In most venues a floor plan or photos with wall dimensions are enough, but in a building like this, saving one trip would have cost the whole set of furniture.
Fabric on an arc works differently than on a straight section
Material stretched over a convex surface lies differently, and if it is laid out badly it wrinkles after a few months. You only see it after a season, when it is too late for corrections.
On curves we run the seams along the line of the arc, not across it. We plan the cut separately for every curved segment, instead of stretching a pattern prepared for a straight section. Krzywy Domek got Belgian fabrics, chosen for the character of the interior by the designer.
What a shape costs
A change of size alone costs nothing. Shortening a segment, a different backrest height on one section of the room or a cut-out for a pillar fit within the normal design process, because we set the fabric cut and the frame construction ourselves in our workshop.
An arc is the exception and we price it individually, because it needs a separate template. The same applies to angles other than 90 degrees. A right-angle corner element, on the other hand, we charge at the same rate as a straight section, measuring it along the outer edge of the backrest.
The Paris model starts at PLN 750 per linear metre. In the same family we have Paris45 with diagonal stitching, and for lounge areas the Stiletto armchair in a matching fabric.
Your venue does not have to be crooked for this to make sense
Krzywy Domek is an extreme, but the problem itself is common. A tenement with a wall leaning by three degrees, a recess from a bricked-up window, a pillar in the middle of the aisle, an attic with a slope above guests' heads: in each of these situations ready-made catalogue furniture leaves floor space unused.
A booth sewn for the room fills that space instead of avoiding it. We build the run of seats from modules of up to 1.4 linear metres, as standard one metre or 1.2, so they fit through standard doors and staircases, and the joints fall where they cannot be seen.
What to send if you have a similar problem
Photos from each side of the room and the wall dimensions are enough for us to tell you whether it can be done from a floor plan or whether we need to come. If the wall is curved, say so straight away, because it changes both the quote and the lead time.
We take orders from 1 linear metre, and the quote is free: +48 535 080 040.
Frequently asked questions
Do you make booths for a curved wall?
Yes. At Krzywy Domek we adapted the Paris model to the curve. We price rounded forms individually, because they need a separate template.
Do you come to measure?
Where the geometry of the interior cannot be written down in two numbers, yes. In Sopot we took the curve of the wall from life. In most venues a floor plan or photos with dimensions are enough.
Is a change of size charged extra?
No. Shortening a segment, a different backrest height or a cut-out for a pillar are part of the design process. We agree a surcharge only for arcs and angles other than 90 degrees.
How much does the Paris sofa cost?
From PLN 750 per linear metre in the base version. Adapting the shape to a specific room is priced with the order.
Why do you run seams differently on an arc?
Fabric on a convex surface behaves differently than on a straight section. A seam run across the arc causes wrinkling after a few months, so we run it along the line of the curve.

We handle rooms with slopes, arcs and pillars the same way, see custom booths.
