Durable custom upholstered furniture for hotels and restaurants

Seat and backrest of a custom upholstered sofa in grey fabric, in the Presta Meble workshop before quality control

When a hotel, club or restaurant looks for custom upholstered furniture, the first questions concern looks, colour and lead time. Less often comes the one that in practice decides whether the purchase pays off: how long the furniture will withstand daily work. The answer shows only after years, not at the handover of the order.

Why durability means more than a first impression

Furniture in a venue works differently than in a home. Guests sit down and get up dozens of times a day, drinks get spilled, the upholstery is cleaned regularly, sometimes with aggressive products.

Furniture that looks great in a photo but loses its shape after two years costs more in total than a more expensive model that lasts a decade. When furnishing several venues at once, this difference shows in the budget straight away, because the cost of replacement multiplies by the number of rooms.

What decides durability: three elements and the way they are joined

The durability of upholstered furniture breaks down into three elements that wear at completely different rates.

The frame is the skeleton of the furniture. Well made, from the right materials and with the right joints, it withstands a dozen or more years of intensive work without deforming. It decides whether the furniture can be renovated after years at all, or has to be replaced entirely.

The foam decides the comfort and how long the furniture keeps its shape. Cheap foam loses its resilience after months; well-chosen foam lasts years of regular, intensive sitting.

The fabric wears out fastest, because it is the only element in constant contact with guests and with cleaning products. Every fabric we offer for venues has at least 40,000 Martindale cycles, and most of the range exceeds 100,000.

The way the construction elements are joined also matters, that is whether the frame is glued, screwed or joined with tenons. Then there is the quality of the sewing, because weak seams split exactly where guests sit most often. In our workshop every element goes through a check before shipping.

A project that proves it: more than 200 metres at Energy2000

In 2016, during the reconstruction of its interior, Energy2000 in Katowice ordered more than 200 linear metres of Booth Box I from us. It is a nightclub, so the furniture worked in conditions no booth in a hotel or restaurant will experience.

After eight years the client came back asking about new furniture. Before we proposed anything, we looked over those booths together. The construction and foam were in good condition, and the eight years of work showed only on the fabric. The room layout also worked perfectly, so there was no reason to change it.

You can also see what upholstery working in a club for several years looks like at Klub 7 Nebo in Brno, where not only the booths but also the walls and the staircase are upholstered. At the other end are decorative fabrics: at Cafe Beluga in Bonn we went for velvet, which in a café works to a completely different rhythm than faux leather in a night venue.

In production since 2005 and not a single warranty claim

Since 2005 we have not had a single warranty claim or complaint in the production of upholstered furniture. We write this as a fact from the workshop, not as a slogan: with more than 50 projects a year for hotels, restaurants and entertainment venues, it is a figure easy to check in a conversation with any of those clients.

It comes from the same thing as the eight years of Box I in a nightclub. A construction designed for intensive use does not break after a season, and a fabric chosen for the real load of the venue does not wear faster than the client expects.

A prototype before production, or how we avoid a costly mistake

Before we sew a set for the whole room, the client looks at and tests a prototype. The sequence is always the same, and we repeat it on every project for a hospitality venue.

Step What happens
1 a conversation about the room layout, the number of seats and the character of the interior
2 a proposal of models and fabric samples, chosen for colour, texture and durability
3 a prototype of the furniture, which the client looks at and tests on site
4 once the prototype is approved, we start production of the whole set

The reason is mundane. The colour of a fabric on a screen looks different than in the light of a particular room, at a different time of day and under different lighting. A prototype also lets you check the comfort of the seat and the height of the backrest next to the existing furniture.

That is how we worked at Restbotanica in Katowice, where we started with samples and prototypes, and only then made the custom Paris sofa and its curved version. The process takes longer than ordering a catalogue model unchanged, but it takes the risk of a mistake across the whole room off the owner's shoulders.

How to assess an upholstered furniture manufacturer before buying

Ask directly about four things: what the frame is made of, what foam goes into the seats, how many Martindale cycles the proposed fabric has, and whether the manufacturer has experience with furniture working under heavy guest traffic. If the question about the foam or the frame gets a vague answer, it is a sign that the construction was not designed with years of work in mind.

The second good sign is projects from several years ago, described as they perform today, not just fresh photos from installation day. A photo of furniture right after delivery says little about its durability. Only the relationship with the client years later shows whether the investment paid off.

Ask also whether the manufacturer gets in touch years later on their own initiative, or whether contact ends with the delivery.

What to do next

Tell us how many hours a day the furniture will be in use, how often it will be cleaned and whether the venue has certificate requirements. We choose the foam and fabric for these three things before we start talking about colour.

Daily care can extend the life of a fabric more than choosing a more expensive cover. We have gathered this in a separate guide on how long an upholstered booth lasts and how to care for it. For a quote, call: +48 535 080 040.

Frequently asked questions

How long does upholstered furniture last in a venue?

The frame a dozen or more years, the foam years, and the fabric wears out first. At Energy2000, after eight years of work in a nightclub, only the fabric needed replacing.

How many Martindale cycles should a contract fabric have?

At least 40,000. Most of our range exceeds 100,000 cycles.

How many complaints have you had?

Since 2005 we have not had a single warranty claim or complaint in the production of upholstered furniture.

Can the furniture be renovated after years?

It depends on the frame. A solid construction lasts a dozen or more years, and it decides whether the furniture can be renovated or has to be replaced entirely.

How do you recognise a manufacturer who thinks about durability?

By being able to answer concretely about the frame, the foam and Martindale, and by showing projects from years ago, not just photos from installation day.
